The designer behind the uniforms for the Expo staff creates uniforms that embrace the
needs of working people!

Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai opened on April 13, 2025. The vibrant uniforms worn by attendants at information desks were designed by Mariko Hattori, whose vision emphasizes diversity by allowing both men and women to choose between pants or long skirts. Her design also balances style with practicality, incorporating mesh fabric to combat the heat, along with deep pockets and waist bags for notebooks and pens.

Originally a fashion designer, Hattori stepped into the world of uniform design about 30 years ago. She quickly became passionate about supporting working people through her craft, and over the years has created countless uniforms—from bus tour guides and luxury car showroom attendants to factory workers.

Two years ago, she submitted her design for the Expo uniforms. Out of 512 entries, her work was selected, propelling her into the spotlight. Yet despite the recognition, her daily routine remains unchanged. This program follows Hattori as she takes on new projects, including the renewal of uniforms for a supermarket and a car dealership.

The supermarket requested a gender-neutral design, and to understand the necessary
functions, Hattori listened closely to employees. Their feedback ranged from practical concerns—straps that come undone too easily, stains that show too much—to frustrations such as “It’s tacky” and “It lacks style.” For those who wear uniforms every day, these garments are directly tied to ease of work and motivation.

Hattori believes that meeting such requests is the essence of her work. The challenge lies in weaving together the growing list of demands into a single design. When inspiration doesn’t come easily, she even spends weekends at her workplace, experimenting and refining.

Uniforms are a part of everyday life, yet behind them lies the dedication of a designer
striving to meet the needs of working people.
