Keynote Address
For a Sustainable World – Responses to the COVID-19 Crisis
Outline
The continuing COVID-19 crisis has brought sweeping changes to the world. While digital and online services have evolved in response to the crisis, inequalities and divisions have also grown wider. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have, in these circumstances, acquired ever greater significance for the common human quest to build a sustainable future where diversity is respected, and vigorous activities towards these ends have been undertaken around the world.
The SDGs adopted unanimously by all 193 UN members in 2015 consisted of 17 goals and 169 targets, ranging from the eradication of poverty by 2030 as a common goal for humanity to the furtherance of education, gender equality, containment of climate change, and improved medical and other health services.
The continuing COVID-19 crisis, too, has highlighted the extreme importance of international cooperation for building the sustainable society.
The JAMCO(Japan Media Communication Center) international symposium for the 2021 fiscal year will be held on the theme of how the media, ICT, and related services can and ought to be used build the sustainable planet. Educational and media experts and academics, community development workers and others will present and discuss the issues from such diverse angles as international cooperation in broadcasting, educational reform, and support for refugees.
